Connecting Technical Roots and Personal Growth

ASHRAE’s deep technical roots will continue to be fed through education, training, standards, research and other materials produced by our volunteer expertsdelivered both virtually and in-person.
The Distinguished Lecturers program is often described as ASHRAE’s most successful program. These lecturers, who present to chapters, will continue to be available virtually (high tech), and when it’s safe for the chapters and lecturers, we will get back to face-to-face presentations to provide the “high touch.”
Next, within our grassroots chapters, the Presidential Award of Excellence has been streamlined and encourages intraregional and intragenerational events and communications. Utilizing technology, we can connect member-to-member with other cultures and experiences.

Accuracy and Reliability

HVAD system operation is a critical requirement for reopening and maintaining adequate safe indoor air quality (AQ) Belimo HVAC actuator and sensor technology offers accuracy, superior reliability, easy installation, and seamless integration with major Building Automation Systems (BAS). Belimo’s combination temperature and humidity sensors are field selectable with CO, VOCs, relative humidity, absolute humidity, enthalpy, and dew point that improve system performance and ensure occupant safety, comfort, and productivity

Ventilation (Dilution)

The need for ventilation for good indoor air quality in buildings has been recognized throughout history. Natural ventilation has been used for centuries to ventilate smoke, dust and odors. During the Crimean and U.S. Civil War, physicians observed that wounded soldiers fared better when they were housed in tents or barns (allowing greater ventilation) rather than crowded hospitals with poor ventilation. ASHRAE Standard  defines ventilation air as “that por{tion of supply air that is outdoor air plus any recirculated air ihat has been treated for the purpose of maintaining acceptable IAQ.” The Wells-Riley equation shows that by increasing the ventilation air rate, the infection risk can be reduced significantly.

Comparing Thermal Performance for Data Center Cooling

Data center air containment systems are considered the most effective techniques for IT cooling control. Both hot and cold-aisle containment can improve the predictability and efficiency of cold air distribution. The thermal performance of both air containment methods are analyzed and quantified in this article. Both simulation and experimental results show that using hot aisle containment can effectively improve the thermal environment.

Lower GWP Refrigerants

Safety and reliable system designs are parasti nefrigerant applications. Environmental concerns about the global magpact of refrigerants have led to development of new lower global potential (CWP) F-gases. Many of these lower CWP refrigerants and 120iS refrigerants, and the risks of using flammable refrigerants have nexer bre curls investigated. Lubricants’ foaming qualities have also not been recet a ted even though they relate to optimal system design, ASHRAPAVeipbis have contributed to the research that closes knowledge gaps and entsth o f these refrigerants and lubricants. This article discusses two ASHA Tesearch projects in process and one tentative research project.

Energy PLC IEQ Innovation Drive Adaptive Reuse Design

A dedicated outdoor air system coupled with gas-phase air scrubbers optimize the outdoor air volume in the renovation and addition of an historic Fort Myers, Fla., building. This resulted in rates below the minimum required for the ASHRAE Standard 62.1-2010 Ventilation Rate Procedure (VRP). In addition, contaminant concentrations stay well below Standard 62.1-2010 VRP design concentrations even during events, resulting in enhanced air quality

Weighing the Benefits and Risks

Once the client has agreed that indoor conditions under a natural ventilation scheme would be acceptable and that the target tenants would have enough personal freedom to adjust devices and clothing and that the cost of ownership is manageable, the conversation of comfort versus energy use can be further explored in greater detail

The California Energy Commission funded a study to determine the energy savings benefits of applying natural ventilation in the state. Linden, Arens and Daisiais a comprehensive study of the “benefits and bartiers to retrofitting California commercial buildings with natural or mixed mode ventilation for cooling” . The study found that energy savings for retrofitting natural ventilation in conjunction with aggressive conventional energy savings (power and lightkog energy use reduction, ceiling fans external shades, increased insulation and enrrly air tempera t ure ranling energy by 44% in pre 2008 buildings, but acknowledged that only 25% of that is due to the natural ventilation itself after the other measures are applied

When evenined by California climate zone, the aggrese measures and natural ventilation packages average about 5% to 6% return on investment for large and medium offices but struggle to reach 4% for most small offices. Chen Augenbroe and Song have a similar simulation-based exercise across four U.S. climate zones for small and medium offices, estimating the potential for a 17% mean energy savings in Atlanta, 19.7% in Seattle, 43.8% in San Francisco and 42.9% in Los Angeles,

Exploring the Feasibility Of Natural Ventilation

HIOP, FELLOW ASTRAE; PETER SIMONDS, PHD, FELLOWLIFE NE MBETURILE Many in the HVAC&R industry can see the appeal of natural ventilation for environmental stewardship concerns; however, there is some reticence about the applica tion of natural ventilation as well as confusion over the interpretation of the current standards. This column compiles a handful of lightly edited excerpts from the new ASHRAE Design Guide for Natural Ventilation to provide insights into critical conversations that inevitably ensue regarding the benefits and risks of natural ventilation.

Case Study 2: Southern California Higher Education Academic Instruction Building

The second example is a new-construction 100,000 gross ft (9000 gross m higher education academic instruction building located in the inland region of Southern California. This project required local heating hot water and domestic hot water utility production with a tie-into a campus chilled water system that uses thermal energy storage. As with Case Study 1, the author served as a member of a design-build team to evaluate various HVAC and plumbing design options to determine the best value solution based on merit. illustrates the baseline against which our proposed approach, shown in Figure 10, was compared
